PhaseInvesting Technologies, Inc. was founded in 2001 as an independent, alternative investment advisory firm. Unlike its competitors, PhaseInvesting recognized early-on the importance of asset allocation--or style allocation--in the case of the alternative investment universe. Rather than focusing on manager selection, PhaseInvesting viewed the alternative portfolio construction problem to be no different from the traditional portfolio construction problem. Already in the late 1990’s the founders articulated their ideas in a piece called The Theory of Wild Beasts (see Publications). Here a new framework with its own concepts and terminology was developed. This new framework would serve as the basis for what would become phaseinvesting. Since then, empirical finance research has validated what PhaseInvesting has long-thought to be correct: because a significant portion of hedge fund returns is accounted for by systematic factors, both traditional and alternative, successful alternative investing is, first and foremost about getting the asset allocation right, i.e. being exposed to the right investment drivers at the right time. In addition to its asset allocation and investment advisory services, PhaseInvesting actively supports clients in developing specialized and innovative alternative investment products
